A Token Migration Can Change the Asset a Swap Delivers

When a token migrates before a cross-chain swap settles, the swap may still be built around the old token contract. A migration changes how a project issues or tracks its token; it does not automatically rewrite a swap quote, bridge instruction or pending transaction. The result depends on when the route checks the token and what the project and swap service support.

What does a token migration change?

A migration usually moves holders from an old token contract or format to a new one under rules set by the project. That can involve swapping tokens through a migration contract, claiming new tokens, or meeting a snapshot or deadline; holders need to follow the project’s stated process.

A cross-chain route identifies assets by details such as their chain and contract address. A quote made before migration may therefore refer to the old asset even if a new token now appears in the project’s wallet or exchange listings. A fuller primer on thor swap explains how cross-chain routing works across chains.

What can happen to a swap already in progress?

There is no single outcome: it depends on the route’s design and the migration plan. If a service still supports the old token, it may complete the route using that asset; if support has changed, the transaction may fail, wait for manual handling, or require a separate migration after settlement.

  • Before sending: Check whether the route lists the old or new contract address.
  • After sending: Keep the transaction hash and check the service’s status page or support guidance.
  • After receiving: Confirm whether the delivered token is eligible for the project’s migration process.
  • Before claiming: Check the project’s official migration terms, deadlines and network requirements.

A quote is not a promise that the destination token will remain unchanged. The sending transaction and the destination payout can happen at different points, so a migration announced between them can affect what the route accepts or delivers.

How should users handle a migration during a swap?

For a swap not yet sent, refresh the quote after checking the project’s migration notice, then confirm the token contract shown by the route. For a pending swap, avoid sending a second transaction until its status and recovery options are clear; duplicate attempts can create a separate transaction to track.

For most users, waiting until the project and swap service both show support for the same token version is the clearest choice. If funds are already in transit, follow the route provider’s instructions first, then complete any token migration after confirming what arrived.
