Fairshake names 32 House candidates for midterm support

Crypto super PAC Fairshake on Oct. 5 named 32 House incumbents it will support in November’s midterms, including six set to receive $1 million each, as Senate action on industry-backed market-structure legislation remains stalled. The Associated Press report said the slate includes 19 Republicans and 13 Democrats, all of whom backed legislation that was a priority for the industry.

Which House members will get the largest sums?

Fairshake plans to spend $1 million each supporting Democratic Reps. Janelle Bynum of Oregon, Steven Horsford of Nevada and Derek Tran of California, and Republican Reps. French Hill of Arkansas, Bryan Steil of Wisconsin and Bill Huizenga of Michigan, according to AP. The group has not disclosed how much it will spend on the other 26 candidates.

Fairshake spokesperson Geoff Vetter told AP that the group and its affiliated PACs spent $40 million supporting 29 Democrats and $31 million supporting 28 Republicans in primaries and special elections this year. He said Fairshake backs pro-crypto candidates in both parties.

How does the slate connect to stalled legislation?

The candidates backed legislation that would establish a federal regulatory framework for digital assets. Senate Democrats blocked the bill in September, citing concerns that it did not adequately address President Donald Trump’s crypto investments, AP reported.

CoinDesk reported that Fairshake’s slate covers incumbents on House committees expected to handle future crypto and tax bills. The super PAC has said it is backing the candidates in their November races, while the amount for most of them remains undisclosed.

What other spending has Fairshake announced?

Fairshake announced plans in September to spend nearly $30 million opposing Democratic Senate candidate Sherrod Brown in Ohio, according to AP. Brown is running against Republican Sen. Jon Husted.

The group and its affiliated PACs reported about $120 million in cash at the end of August, AP reported. Fairshake has not said whether it plans additional House or Senate spending before November.
